What is the difference between Freshwater and Akoya Pearls?

• The main difference between Freshwater and Akoya pearls stems from where and how they are cultivated.  Freshwater pearls are cultivated in freshwater such as lakes and ponds where Akoya pearls are cultivated in salt water.
• Freshwater pearls form much easier than Akoya pearls and are therefore less expensive.
• Akoya pearls tend to be more white, have better luster, and be more round than freshwater pearls.
• Freshwater pearls tend to be more durable and come in a variety of colors.
